Short Stories

The American Short Story, as a form of fiction, has been around for decades. We find short stories in popular magazines such as “The New Yorker;” in genre magazines such as “True Romance” and in full length anthologies such as “Contemporary American Short Stories.”

It could be said that this form of fiction arose from the tradition of oral storytelling from around the world. A short story is generally based on one situation that revolves around one person or small group of people. The cast of characters is tight with the major character encountering the situation and resolving it quickly. This is by no means the single definition of a short story. The key to writing an effective short story is the tightness of the author’s narrative and dialogue. Words are never wasted in a short story, and every word has a role to play.
